Eslakon breathed heavily as he placed his palm on a nearby pine tree, resting briefly before wiping the sweat off of his forehead. He had been running for a long time, but this was his test on himself. He wanted to see if he could find the Nowlen Lake on his own, but he was beginning to have some doubts.
Finally catching his breath, he slowly walked off, the pine needles softening his footsteps, as a familiar odor filled his nostrils. Though he was unable so see the lake through the tightly packed trees, for the sun’s light barely penetrated their branches, he knew the lake was there. He stretched his legs before jogging off once more, weaving his way through the trees trying to maintain a straight line.
Light flickered over his face as he leaped over roots, tumbled under branches, and then continued running through the dense forest. He didn’t want to use his blade to cut the limbs out of the way, for it would make him much easier to track, and he didn’t want to harm the trees.
A wave of happiness washed over him as he spotted a line of direct light shining into the trees, and then hastened his footsteps. Several branches scraped his cheeks as he was unable to duck quickly enough, but he could heal those later with magic. He was going to dive directly into the water, just to see how Chara reacts.
He slowed to a stop, How would Chara react? He pondered on the thought for a moment, for he had never tried to startle her before, though she most likely already picked up his scent. Almost fifty feet from the tree line, he slowly crept past many of the trees that blocked his view, trying to see if Chara was even there yet.
Along the shore of the lake, Chara lied facing the water, cleaning blood off her claws with her long tongue. After she was finished, she growled and looked around the trees ahead of her and behind. When she saw nothing, her growl increased as she kneaded the gravel with he freshly cleaned talons.
A pang of regret hit Eslakon in the chest like an arrow; He couldn’t frustrate her even more. “Chara?” He called, and then smiled as her mood immediately changed. He jogged out into the opened, but was forced to stop and shield his eyes for the sun was directly in front of him. He looked down at the ground, and tried to shake the glare from his eyes.
Chara’s paws sunk into the ground as she put her full weight on them. She lifted them from the small indention of rocks, throwing a line of gravel through the air. ”Lets not do that again.” She nuzzled him.
He placed a hand on her forehead, feeling the rough scales that covered it. “I agree,” Wanting to make it up to her, Eslakon promised to catch her some more fish, for it was one of her favorite meats. She like how easily the flesh was stripped off from the bone, despite the scales. He glanced around the ground, spotting almost hundreds of footprints along the border of the lake where she had tried to find him, for the trees were too packed together for her to land without injury.
After rubbing his forehead on hers, Eslakon approached the water, and then held up his forearms. Grasping onto his mood, his love for Chara, a blue orb began to glow within his right arm, sending a faint aura that bounced over his arm and into his hand. Lowering his left arm, the swirling ball on energy began to glow brighter, ready to cast whatever magic he wanted other than destructive. First, he healed the scratches on his face that diligently oozed blood, and then cast a continuous spell that would keep oxygen in his blood cells. The orb of energy sank back into his hand.
He felt strange not having to breathe, for his magic would keep oxygen in his body and get rid of carbon dioxide that would have forced him to exhale otherwise. He sat and unlaced his boots, and then tossed them behind him before standing up again. He untied his belt that held his sword’s sheath at his side, and then drew the long blade.
Examining the sharp edge, he flicked his thumb over it to ensure that hit was sharp, and that it was. Its blade was the length of his arm and was as wide as three of his fingers. A spiraling design had been etched into the blade, which ran up to the tip beside the bleeder. The handle was wrapped tightly in leather in a way that his fingers would set in grooves when he wielded it to allow better control. The rounded hilt had no designs etched into it, but was plain for bashing in a foe’s skull if need be.
Having not taken a breath or exhaled for at least a minute, Eslakon abandoned his traveling cape and then dove into the water, sword in hand. The clear water allowed him to see for a long distance away, though he dare not linger near the bottom, for there has been fish even bigger than Chara at the bottom of this lake. He doubted that they would bother a spellcaster though, for he could crush the fish’s brain with enough concentration. That would be a good meal for Chara, if he could get it up to the surface.
Bubbles rose from his hair and clothes as he paddled his way deeper into the water, the sun’s light shining all the way to the bottom, allowing him to see all the fish the swam underneath and above him. He looked around for any fish larger than he, and then swam deeper when he couldn’t see any. Chara must have scared them away.
Suddenly, a massive pillar of bubbles rocketed down from the surface, descending until it was right in front of him. His heart leaped into his throat, and he was about to stab with his sword until the bubbles floated back up the surface, revealing Chara, the light reflecting off of her scales and casting several lines of light through the water.
He smiled, and then exhaled because he was used to breathing, but no bubbles of air floated to the surface. Leveling his feet so that they were facing the bottom, he switched his sword to his left hand and then pulled more energy from the base of his right forearm. Throwing his sword upward, slammed a wave of magic into the hilt, causing it to rocket out of the water and land beside his sheath, at least where he though his sheath was.
” Come, Eslakon. We shall hunt together.” Her voice moved through the water as though it was air, for he could hear it perfectly.
Eslakon, nodded, and then they swam off into the deeper, colder, unexplored areas of the lake.
(Wow, that was a long post!)
